Tree Tutorial part 2
After letting the papier mache dry fully we can begin painting. First off I base coated the tree with white and once dry I painted the whole thing with Games Workshop's Scorched Brown paint. Water down your paint slightly so that the thickness of the paint doesn't cover up the details created by the papier mache.

Next I painted the whole thing again, this time using a combination of Games Workshop's Camo Green along with some white and black (you could just use a slightly dark grey) but I didn't make an effort to get in all the gaps, I allowed some space to let the Scorched Brown show through. After that I painted the tree with a wash of Scorched Brown mixed with a fair amount of black to make it quite dark. A wash is just very runny paint that doesn't stick to the regular surfaces but clings into the gaps and spaces of the tree. As it dries it creates natural looking shadow in the recesses and crevasses of the tree.

Once the wash has dried it is time to begin dry brushing. Using a combination of Camo Green and a lighter grey than last time, dry brush over all of the tree, making sure to brush over all raised edges and not to put your brush into the recesses. This dry brush is there to highlight the previous Camo Green coating so do not cover every inch of the tree.
After the first dry brush has dried, use an even lighter combination of Camo green, black and white (or grey) than the last one. Then dry brush over the dry brush you just did effectively highlighting it. Now in essence the tree is complete. You don't need to paint it anymore if you don't want to but you can add more highlights or create more shadow if you want to. You could even add some foliage on to the branches. |

Now that the tree is complete you can add it to a base or just stand it on your table. These trees can be made directly on to a base as well like the Blood Forest found in the Archives section. In the tutorial I used Scorched Brown as the main dark colour but you can use others as the following pictures will show. You can also use a different green instead of the Camo Green that I used or make it darker or lighter depending on what you are going for.
