Cave Continued
In this part of the tutorial I will show you how I painted the cave. The pictures, unfortunately, aren't great but I will tell you what I did anyway.
First off I painted the whole thing white, that was my choice of basecoat although you can just as easily use black. Next I made a grey by combining Black, Titanium White and Cobalt Blue at a ratio of about 4:5:1. This left me with a darkish grey, the blue adds a hint of coldness to stone but you can leave it out if you want to.

Once the first layer had dried I then used a wash of black over the whole thing. For those who don't know what a wash is you simply make your paint really runny by adding water then when you brush it over your model the paint runs into the cracks and dries inside them without sticking to the raised edges of the model. This creates a more natural and simple way of making shadows.
|
After the wash I used another mix of black, white and blue this time at a ratio of roughly 5:13:2, creating a much lighter grey. Then by brushing it over the model almost as though dry-brushing, because I don't want to ruin the shading I just did, I have started to give this model some more depth and you can now see that the model is starting to come together.

Repeat the process except this time add more white to your paint and have less paint on your brush than before. Don't go over the whole model either this time, start picking out where the light would hitting the model and do those areas. This is mainly the top areas and edges that would be in direst sunlight and parts of the base where it is not covered by the cave roof.

Once again add more white to your paint and even if little blue if you want to and dry-brush the areas you just highlighted. Don't cover all of highlighted area, think of it as highlighting the highlights. Once you've done that you can add another layer of highlights or another wash to add some more shadow. The cave is now complete and you start using it... or you can add some other touches if you want to such; grass, moss or other flock.
I hope you liked this tutorial and will be making your own cave soon, or I hope I have at least inspired you do something similar. I will show you my completed cave soon, but I won't tell you what or how I did it. |
